These periodic inspections are the backbone of the dam safety program, Hess-Brittelle said. The assessments will help dam safety experts look at the bigger picture in terms of the probability, for example, of a reservoir reaching water surface elevations that could initiate a dam failure. The District’s first periodic assessment was conducted. The dam owner applies for a loan from one of the local area banks participating in the Dam Safety Linked Deposit Program. After the dam owner presents the Inspection Report, the bank evaluates the credit-worthiness of the dam owner using its criteria. It these criteria are met, the bank then enters into a loan agreement with the dam owner. Dam Safety Permit Requirements The dam owner also is responsible for periodic inspections and any repairs or improvements needed to maintain the dam as permitted. Also see Dam Safety Inspection Report Requirements and Guidelines to assist in application submission and dam-permit-requirements for general information. Reclamation’s Comprehensive Facility Review program requires periodic dam safety and operation and maintenance inspections to ensure facilities are operated and maintained in a safe and reliable manner. Historically, periodic diver inspections have been conducted over the life of a structure to assess.

BOX Dam and Levee Hazard Classification. The National Inventory of Dams (NID) hazard classification system (see Table 1) is broad, qualitative, and based on the potential threat to life and property in the event of dam criteria for inclusion in the inventory are provided in Table 2.A dam is given a "high" hazard rating if its failure can result in fatalities, whether the dam.
